History remembers the moments that transformed America's future. Today, memory and storage are the infrastructure of the AI era, chip manufacturing is the backbone of technological sovereignty and AI acceleration is redefining what's possible. The semiconductor companies that thrive will be those that rethink how they develop talent and build the capabilities needed to lead this new era of innovation.

AI adoption, cloud computing, data center expansion and investments supported by the CHIPS and Science Act are fueling unprecedented demand for semiconductor talent. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and Oxford Economics, semiconductor employment is projected to grow from approximately 345,000 workers to 460,000 by 2030, creating nearly 115,000 new jobs. Yet roughly 67,000 of those positions could go unfilled without additional investments in workforce development and education.

In my conversations with semiconductor leaders, workforce availability and retention remain top priorities. Whether the focus is a new fab, production expansion or long-term growth strategy, the questions are often the same: Where will the talent come from? How can organizations attract and retain the skilled professionals they need? And how can they build the technology capabilities required to compete in the future?

The good news is that the semiconductor talent gap is solvable. Closing it, however, will require organizations to think beyond traditional recruiting and invest in workforce development, education partnerships, AI-enabled technologies, long-term talent planning, and the digital capabilities and services needed to support future growth.

How Data Center Growth and AI Are Intensifying the Semiconductor Talent Challenge

Several long-term trends are accelerating long-term semiconductor growth, including AI adoption, cloud computing and the rapid expansion of data center infrastructure. As both industries scale, demand is increasing for many of the same technical skill sets.

Data centers need network engineers, cybersecurity professionals, AI infrastructure architects, automation specialists, IT operations leaders and technology professionals who understand uptime, resilience, energy efficiency and critical infrastructure. As AI infrastructure expands, demand is increasing for many of these highly specialized technology skill sets.

Semiconductor companies need many of those same capabilities. They also require highly specialized expertise in AI-enabled production, automation, cybersecurity, data and analytics, software, quality systems and the digital technologies that support modern semiconductor operations. In a recent ISM World article, I emphasized that talent is now as important as access to capital or equipment. The chip industry is already feeling the strain, particularly in highly skilled technology, engineering and digital transformation roles.

I also noted that the semiconductor industry must invest in the future workforce now, especially as retirements drain expertise from an aging labor pool. According to ISM World, U.S. semiconductor employment has declined significantly since 2000, even as new industry investment is expected to support major job creation by 2032, creating a potential shortfall of tens of thousands of skilled workers by the end of the decade.

For business leaders, the implication is clear.

Waiting until a fab is under construction or a production ramp is underway is too late. Workforce strategy needs to move upstream.
