Large Retailer Gains Comprehensive Data Engineering Strategy

Business Challenge

To remain competitive, our client serving more than 17 million customers a week in the US, Canada, and Mexico, knew they must continue to accelerate technology capabilities and invest in driving decisions based on data and predictive analytics. This meant hiring the right technical resources, however, they found that competing for qualified candidates was incredibly labor-intensive. There was no time to identify, attract, interview, and onboard in-demand data scientists and data engineers. In addition, the competition was offering starting salaries above market rates for new college graduates. Having partnered successfully with Experis on other initiatives, the client’s hiring managers reached out to us for guidance and support.

Solution

In partnership with our client’s data science team leadership, Experis built a co-managed program staffed by experienced data scientists and data engineers. Our primary focus was on understanding the client’s needs and identifying the profile of the core attributes and skills required to meet them. Together, we developed a thorough, but straightforward technical screening questionnaire founded in Python, C++, Bash, and SQL principles, enabling us to evaluate candidates and identify where they could add the most value. We further streamlined the process by creating a one-hour candidate coding challenge for additional vetting and confirming hiring decisions.

Results

Through the co-managed data science program, Experis delivered a comprehensive and cost-effective data engineering strategy. It enabled the client to compete for and obtain in-demand technical resources. The program also helped improve communication, prioritize candidate onboarding milestones, improve team culture and autonomy, and scale to support growth.
