Our Round-the-Clock Footprint
Our Story
Case Study 1: Compatibility Testing
Building and managing a client compatibility solution
Challenge: A major AAA game development and publishing partner asked EGS to assist in building, staffing, running, and maintaining a compatibility lab onsite.
Solution:
- Used robust recruiting services to staff lab quickly with industry-leading knowledge, including a director with over a decade of experience supporting compatibility at a major developer
- Initially focused on building a strong compact/configuration service, while also looking to slowly add services based on client need
- Built out a web portal and configuration picker to streamline configuration services and customization options available
Results:
- Expanded service offerings to include mobile devices, Photo-Sensitive Epilepsy, Peripheral, Anti-Virus, and specialized Multiplayer services
- Gradually increased market share, achieving and maintaining over 90% market share of GPU chipsets
- Achieved 90%+ customer satisfaction for compatibility service as a whole across several years
Case Study 2: Data-Driven Efficiency
Creating greater efficiency via tooling
Challenge: EGS and a major AAA game development partner were looking for new ways to report on and increase test efficiency. Of particular concern was the amount of time testers actually spent testing, and what the rest of their time was spent on.
Solution:
- Created a lightweight application which allowed for high-level organizational time tracking
- Restructured SQL data backend to handle additional data sources to allow for real-time reporting
- Created dashboards reflecting this data, made available to the appropriate stakeholders and reported across QBR/MBR client meetings
Results:
- Increased time spent testing by 10%, and reduced overall meeting time by ~ 15% across roles/positions
- Established new KPIs to target appropriate time metrics by project and role/position across the EGS organization
- Client was so pleased with the results they purchased the tool from EGS to use for their own organization
Case Study 3: LiveOps
Reducing customer-impacting bugs and time to research/reproduce in live
Challenge: AAA game development partner was struggling with rapid release schedules and resultant customer feedback. The client desired a better approach towards customer feedback and end user scenarios.
Solution:
- Restructured Release Candidate testing to provide greater efficiency and allow for more end user testing just prior to release
- Rebuilt/redesigned QA workflow to include all-discipline Customer Support Board
- Created a new strategy and processes for how to embed testers within game communities, outside of simple Zen Desk ticketing, which often lacks important details
Results:
- Time to complete Release Candidate testing reduced by 25%, allowing increased testing time for ad hoc/end user scenarios, resulting in additional customer-facing bugs
- Time to research community issues reduced by more than 50% in some instances, increasing speed at which bugs can be addressed
- Increased awareness of issues across different communities, resulting in a reduction in player-reported bugs via other avenues
Case Study 4: Stress and Load Testing
Testing for PC background application
Challenge: A major software publisher asked us to test an AAA PC game. What the client didn't consider was the number of open programs normally running in the background.
Solution:
- Testing was performed through a small subset of PCs to represent common hardware manufacturers with additional software installed
- Commonly used applications and software were tested at the same time: MS Office, game launchers, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, web browsers, etc.
Results:
- The game launched on time without any compatibility issues
- Game may be played while software & applications are running in the background
- More than expected performance degradation can be possible
Case Study 5: Offshore Delivery
Building a new delivery center
Challenge: A leading game developer and publisher faced rising operational costs and wanted to expand beyond traditional hubs like Mexico and India. They tasked EGS with maintaining reliable U.S. operations while finding a low-cost overseas option. The main goal was to reduce delivery risks and ensure consistent, high-quality testing while optimizing costs.
Solution:
- Opened our first global delivery center in Hungary due to its strategic location in Europe, access to a skilled workforce, and favorable business environment
- Center designed to accommodate 110 highly skilled testing professionals equipped with the latest tools and technologies required for comprehensive games testing
- Center was structured to offer scalable and flexible testing services, ensuring that the client could ramp up or down based on project demands without compromising quality or timelines
Results:
- Client’s operational risks were mitigated
- Testing processes became streamlined, quality improved, project delays decreased, and overall testing costs reduced
- Managed service model offered greater transparency and control, allowing the client to focus on core development and positioning EGS as a reliable partner for future growth in the gaming industry
Case Study 6: Data-Driven Investigation
Dashboards to better track mobile ad failures
Challenge: A major software publisher needed help with a data dashboard that was too high-level, allowing some errors to go underreported.
Solution:
- Our data analysts were tasked with creating more focused dashboards, including separating out all small markets to assess overall ad stability
- New dashboard error reporting identified a major issue specific to a particular region, which had a significantly high failure rate
- EGS improved and iterated dashboards with production feedback, including all major service providers by region
Results:
- The major issue responsible for the majority of ad failures worldwide during the year was identified and fixed within weeks
- Closer relationship between the Ad team and Test, including a deep understanding of Ad software development kits (SDKs) from Test and more rapidly identifying issues across disciplines
- Significantly increased ad revenue after adopting a more efficient partnership
Case Study 7: Success Story - Hardware Compatibility Testing
Ensuring a successful product launch
Challenge: A Fortune 500 technology developer reported a common issue: users were experiencing drops when navigating a specific area on a PC version of a highly popular shooter game.
Solution:
- A variety of PC configurations were set up on different network connections with varying hardware components
- Applied existing test casing in and around trouble areas to reproduce the issue while determining any potential causes and component commonalities
Results:
- EGS experts narrowed down the issue within six hours. The cause was navigating between specific zones while in specific vehicles on unique hardware.
- Hundreds of bugs were filed in the database and developers fixed the issue
- Within weeks 25+ million people were playing the game
Case Study 8: Automation
Reducing manual test efforts and increasing accuracy
Challenge: A major software publisher was struggling with long release-deployment times. The client relied on manual testing, which grew with each release.
Solution:
- Created a bespoke application to automate time-consuming preorder reauthorization scenarios
- End-to-end regression test cases were written in MABL to decrease manual testing overhead for each release
- Created two additional applications to automate the creation of test data and allow for bulk edits, significantly increasing the efficiency of manual testing
Results:
- Reduced time validating reauthorization flows by over two hours per release
- Brought down testing time for shipped orders by five minutes per, across hundreds of orders
- Overall reduced manual testing efforts and hours spent by over 70%
Case Study 9: Certification and Submission
Owning submission of client titles for certification
Challenge: Our AAA game publishing partner needed to prioritize their full-time employee resources. They asked us to handle the full release of a title with little support from their teams, including submission for certification for major platforms.
Solution:
- Ran all certification passes, scheduled all optional and final submissions, tracked any required waivers, and ultimately signed off on a final build
- EGS solely responsible for representing quality during triage, assisting in determining which bugs needed to be fixed
- Assisted release management in submitting the game to certification, including preparing all required files, etc.
Results:
- First-time pass-through certification for the title and ACU bypass on subsequent releases
- Generated enough client confidence and strong relationships with Test and Production to fully own four additional titles
- All five titles were well-received at launch, with an average Metacritic score of 84%
Case Study 10: Functional Testing
Developing deep testing cycles
Challenge: Our AAA game development partner was concerned about their lack of deep testing cycles, which left them with little confidence about product release. Concerns remained about the lack of time to test properly.
Solution:
- Conducted interviews to understand concerns and root causes
- Found that QA lacked time to execute quality checks and integration tests after implementation
- Designed strategy to improve testing confidence and product quality and identified other needs
Results:
- Provided test plan with timelines; our QA leadership managed the project
- Additional testing found harder-to-locate issues which prevented main build issues
- Logged over 5,000 bugs within 3 months, improving confidence in testing and dramatically improving the user experience
