Job Type: Contract
- Industry: Technology and IT
Our client, an advanced technology organization focused on automation and AI-driven engineering workflows, is seeking an AI Engineer to join their team. As an AI Engineer, you will be part of the Engineering organization supporting Agentic Systems and LLM Automation initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong drive to ship production-quality AI, the ability to break down ambiguous problems into reliable agent workflows, and the discipline to measure performance and improve quality over time—so your work becomes the foundation for systems teams depend on daily.
Job Title:AI Engineer
Location:Austin, TX
What's the Job?
- Design, build, and operate agentic AI systems—LLM-powered agents that reason over enterprise data, call tools, and complete multi-step workflows end to end.
- Decompose ambiguous technical and operational problems into orchestrated agent workflows, including planner/executor/reviewer patterns, state handling, retries, and graceful failure paths.
- Expose safe, well-scoped agent capabilities by implementing tool interfaces (function-calling and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers) that wrap internal APIs, databases, and enterprise systems.
- Develop and operationalize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, including chunking, embeddings, vector/hybrid search, re-ranking, and context assembly from enterprise sources.
- Ship production Python services and APIs for agent inference using FastAPI, Docker, and CI/CD—while instrumenting agents with tracing, structured logging, and latency/token/cost observability.
What's Needed?
- 3-5 years of professional software, ML, or data engineering experience, including at least 1 year building LLM-based or GenAI applications.
- Strong production Python engineering skills (not just notebooks), including testing, packaging, async patterns, and API development with FastAPI or similar.
- Hands-on experience with at least one LLM orchestration framework (LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or an equivalent) in a shipped application.
- Demonstrated experience building RAG systems, including embeddings, vector stores (e.g., FAISS, pgvector, Pinecone, Chroma), and retrieval quality tuning.
- Working knowledge of SQL and cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, or equivalent), plus experience containerizing and deploying services with Docker through CI/CD on a major cloud (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
What's in it for me?
- Own your components from prototype through production, with senior engineers available for design review.
- Build agent workflows that turn complex technical and operational tasks into reliable automation engineering teams can use immediately.
- Work at the intersection of orchestration, tool-calling, retrieval quality, and production observability—where measurable improvements matter.
- Collaborate with domain experts, data engineers, and product stakeholders to convert manual processes into dependable agent-driven systems.
- Contribute to evaluation and quality by building regression suites and task-level success metrics that gate releases.
