We're hiring a SRE/Core Infrastructure Engineer – Lead to provide technical and team leadership for our on-premises and cloud infrastructure group. This senior role sets technical direction, leads a team of infrastructure engineers, owns how well we operate, and works with leadership on infrastructure and cloud strategy. The Lead stays hands-on with complex engineering work and builds team capability, standards and processes.
Responsibilities
Leadership and team development

  • Lead, mentor and coach a team of Professional and Associate infrastructure engineers.
  • Assign and prioritize work, balancing project delivery, operational support and technical debt.
  • Run team planning, code and design reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Help hire, onboard, set performance goals for and grow team members.
  • Serve as the main technical escalation point for the infrastructure group.

Architecture and strategy

  • Own the architecture, standards and reference designs for VMware (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter), compute, storage, backup and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP).
  • Build and maintain the infrastructure technology roadmap, including hybrid-cloud and cloud-migration plans.
  • Evaluate new technologies, vendors and platforms. Prepare business cases, cost analyses and recommendations.
  • Help with budgeting, forecasting, licensing, contract renewals and vendor management.
  • Find and reduce infrastructure risk across availability, security, capacity and lifecycle.

Observability and reliability

  • Own the Datadog monitoring strategy and standards for infrastructure and supported services.
  • Define standards for monitors, tagging, dashboards, alert thresholds, notification routing and escalation.
  • Bring Datadog configuration under infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or the API).
  • Lead efforts to cut alert noise, close monitoring gaps and improve mean time to detect and resolve (MTTD/MTTR).
  • Set and report on SLOs, SLIs, availability, capacity and service-health metrics for leadership.

Operations and incident management

  • Own the on-call rotation, including its structure, runbooks and escalation paths. Take part in on-call as needed.
  • Act as incident commander for major infrastructure incidents. Lead blameless post-incident reviews and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Make sure patching, upgrades, lifecycle management and vulnerability remediation finish on schedule and stay compliant.
  • Own the disaster-recovery and business-continuity plans, including regular DR testing and validation.

Projects and automation

  • Lead medium-to-large, cross-functional infrastructure projects from requirements through delivery and operational handoff.
  • Push for automation with Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, Python and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Set documentation standards for runbooks, architecture diagrams, asset inventory and DR procedures.
  • Partner with the security, networking, application, cloud, identity and business teams.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in systems administration, infrastructure engineering or cloud engineering, including at least 2–3 years leading engineers or technical teams.
  • Expert-level, hands-on VMware experience (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter), including design, upgrades and performance tuning.
  • Deep knowledge of Windows Server and/or Linux administration at enterprise scale.
  • Strong enterprise storage and backup expertise: SAN, NAS, RAID, snapshots, replication, backup and recovery, and capacity planning.
  • Proven experience designing and running workloads in AWS and/or Azure.
  • Advanced Datadog (or comparable) experience, including setting monitoring standards and building monitors, dashboards, alerts and SLOs at scale.
  • Strong networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, firewalls and load balancing.
  • A track record of leading complex projects, managing incidents and running root-cause analysis.
  • Experience with budgeting, vendor management and technology roadmapping.
  • Excellent communication skills, including presenting to technical teams and to leadership.
  • Willingness to take part in and manage an on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Datadog managed as code through Terraform or the API. Mature IaC and GitOps practices.
  • Advanced automation with Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell and Python.
  • Expertise in Active Directory, Entra ID, IAM and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience leading large-scale cloud migrations or datacenter consolidations.
  • Experience designing high availability, disaster recovery and business continuity, and applying security frameworks (CIS, NIST).
  • Familiarity with ITIL and with change, incident and problem management.
  • Certifications such as VMware VCP or VCAP, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Solutions Architect – Professional, or equivalent.

What Success Looks Like

  • The team runs reliable, observable and secure infrastructure with fewer and shorter incidents.
  • Datadog coverage is complete, standardized and managed as code. Alerts are actionable and low-noise.
  • Patching, lifecycle and DR testing finish on schedule and are auditable.
  • Major projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • The team grows in skill and independence, and on-call becomes sustainable.
  • The Lead becomes a trusted advisor to leadership on infrastructure architecture and cloud strategy.
