Technical Services: Windows Migration for a Department of Corrections

Our client, a department of corrections, initiated a deployment of Windows 7 to 5,000 workstations in 600 sites across the U.S. and Canada. The client needed to upgrade and migrate all computers from Windows XP and Office 2003 to Windows 7 and Office 2010. When deployment started, it became clear that the project plan was not robust enough to facilitate a large-scale deployment, exposing delays and other issues.

The client needed to upgrade and migrate all computers from Windows XP and Office 2003 to Windows 7 and Office 2010. Experis Solution

Experis performed an accelerated Windows 7 readiness assessment to provide recommendations to bring the project back on track. Elements assessed included project control; image, hardware, and application readiness; deployment; and training. The client then asked Experis to help with the migration/deployment. Following our proven methodology, we provided daily oversight of the project, including recommendations in several areas:

  • Receiving, imaging, and staging facilities
  • Imaging process, including hardware and/or software
  • Application package deployment, including software
  • Site deployment schedules to ensure sites best use resources
  • Asset management and disposal process

Results

Experis delivered the Windows 7 migration with minimal disruption to the end users and optimal return on investment for the client. We enabled members of the client’s staff to drive project components without unnecessarily increasing their workload. The implementation delivered:

  • 600-plus PCs transitioned to Thin Clients
  • In-place upgrades to 2,780 PCs
  • New PC refreshes to 1,825 PCs
